Glasgow City Spires - this all-out rocker - inspired by a hazy hungover Sunday morning walk along Glasgow’s Great Western Road and down through Kelvingrove Park - drives with a passion for Jimmy’s hometown. This passion all the stronger for his exile of a quarter of a century. Listen to the vocals. At times growling back at Matt Crawford’s Hammond - at times soaring - driven without remorse by Mick Ivory’s drums to a climactic guitar crescendo.
As with Rear View Mirror, the drawing behind the cover art for this single is by Julian O’Dell. Julian’s artwork has long been a favourite of the band’s. His work can be found on his website artattackoncancer.org . All proceeds from his sales go to the Action Against Cancer charity.
lyrics
Drifter, migrant, aimless child
I walk the city mile for mile
The streets below my soles they’re home to me
My home town’s now a foreign land
I left a boy returned a man
I’m finding out that freedom isn’t free
Its never free
I heard your song pulling me back to where my heart belongs
Your lyrics they’re no empty good to me
I watched the sunrise
Paint the Glasgow city spires
I heard the echo of your sighs
I’ve felt the cool breeze
Touch these empty spaces
I’ve seen the sunset in your eyes
A raging fever in my blood
To stand where all my father’s stood
It dragged me back against the undertow
I’ve seen the lights on foreignn graves
I’ve touched the desert - Stormed the waves
But I can’t recall the colour of your soul
Still can’t recall
After all I’ve said and done’s
The anger of a lonely son
So hard to let it out and let it go
I watched the sunrise
Paint the Glasgow city spires
I heard the echo of your sighs
I’ve felt the cool breeze
Touch these empty spaces
I’ve seen the sunset in your eyes
